Become a Sleep Consultant and Make Your Investment Back in 3 Months
Updated: Oct 28
If you’re the kind of person who can count on yourself, you’re in the right place.
We often hear that our online sleep consultant course, the Sleep Consultant Academy, is “quite an investment.”
And it is!
It’s an investment in yourself.
It’s an investment in your family.
It’s an investment in the well-being of families everywhere.
It’s a financial investment.
It’s an investment of time.
Let’s talk about the objections to these investments today, because finances and time, especially, can be hang-ups for a lot of women who are interested in becoming a certified pediatric sleep consultant.
Investing in Yourself
Since you’ve had kids, do you just feel like something is missing?
Many moms feel like they lose themselves in motherhood. And, while it’s true that you’re no longer the same person you were before you had a child, it doesn’t mean you can’t have something for yourself, whether it’s a career, hobby, or class that is for you to focus on solely.
Some women change careers after becoming mothers. Some become stay-at-home moms. Some are content with continuing to do what they did pre-children.
If you find that you’re looking for something more, and are looking to add something that is flexible and rewarding and you just so happen to have a passion for sleep, becoming a certified sleep consultant may be just the thing for you!
Educational investment, like becoming certified in sleep consulting, provides several advantages for both the individual and society as a whole. Higher education frequently results in better-paying jobs and higher income - set your own prices, you’re the boss! Additionally, research indicates that people with higher degrees and more certifications typically have greater levels of job satisfaction (probably because they make more money), giving them more tools to make the most of their lives.
Investing in your sleep education can help you develop personally, increase your professional opportunities, and realize your full potential as a human being and contributing member of society. A better understanding of the parenting world can result in more rewarding and meaningful work, which can improve both your life and the life of your family.
Self-proclaimed “sleep nerds,” we (Ashley and Katelyn) decided to start The Collective for Family Rest and Wellness so that we could ensure every parent has access to the evidence-based sleep support they need - and to empower women to build successful sleep consulting businesses.
Investing in yourself in this way can be the gift that keeps on giving - to yourself, to your family, and to others.
Investing in Your Family
If you’re looking for a career that allows you to have the freedom and flexibility to work from home, raise your children, and still contribute to your household income, then becoming a certified sleep consultant might be the perfect choice for you!
In a number of ways, starting your own sleep consulting business might give you more lifestyle flexibility. The freedom to work how, when, and where you choose, allowing you to design a work schedule that best suits your needs and preferences, is one of the key advantages. Sleep consultants also frequently benefit from a more adaptable work environment, which can boost output and overall job happiness. Work while your baby sleeps? Sign me up!
You can also explore your interests and passions around sleep when you start your own sleep consulting business, providing you the chance to earn money while engaging in activities you enjoy (social media, providing education, working with families, working with professionals, networking, etc.). This may result in a more contented and joyful way of living. Furthermore, as a business owner, having a flexible attitude can help you overcome obstacles and adjust to shifting conditions, further boosting your capacity to design a lifestyle that meets your family’s needs.
For many of our sleep consultants, lifestyle is the biggest reason they were looking for a career change. One in particular, since becoming a sleep consultant and building her business, has moved from full-time teaching to part-time teaching, from leaving the classroom to working from her home, and also recently helped her husband take on a less demanding job so he can be home with their family more…something they couldn’t do if she was still in the classroom (and that’s not even considering childcare costs that they would have had to pay if she was still teaching full time!).
Did you know that some sleep consultants work out of an office, but most work from home?! Moms can benefit much from working from home, including greater flexibility, improved work-life balance, and lower stress.
The ability to have a more flexible schedule, which enables moms to combine family and work commitments more efficiently, is one of the key benefits of working remotely. Due to time and financial restrictions, research shows that many new mothers drastically cut back on their working hours or quit their jobs after giving birth. Do you feel like you’re paying an extra mortgage each month just so your child can go to daycare? You’re not alone. Remote work helps women stay in the workforce.
Additionally, mothers who work remotely may have a better work-life balance since they are able to balance their time and efforts more effectively between work and family. When compared to office workers, this flexibility can result in higher levels of well-being and productivity. Additionally, working from home during pregnancy can help lower stress because remote work provides a more welcoming and comfortable environment.
Our advice for working from home?? Be where your feet are. If it’s time to work, it’s time to work. If it’s time to be with your family, be with your family.
If bringing in income to your household is important, you can always start sleep consulting as a side business, and as you nurture it and it grows, you can move from side hustle to part-time, to full-time sleep consulting! Honestly, make it work for you.
Investing in the Wellbeing of Families Everywhere
In doing something like this (running your own sleep consulting business), not only are you helping your family, but you are also helping other families! This is what it always comes back to.
People will, inevitably, ask you, “How did you get into this sleep consulting thing?” And most of us experienced the sleep deprivation that comes with having a new baby. And when we were finally on the other side and our whole household was sleeping again, it was life-changing. And you want other families to have that same life-changing experience.
Regardless of whether families actually hire you as their sleep consultant or not, you can still have an impact.
Many sleep consultants will utilize social media, blogging, podcasting, etc. as free forms of advertising. Providing this educational content to your audience is what paints you as a sleep expert. You can share your expertise and over time, these people will begin to trust you. Then, if or when they have issues with their child’s sleep, they know exactly who to reach out to for help.
They can hire you and you can support them in a one-on-one capacity. So, as you can see, you can help families whether they actually work with you or not. Not everyone will need the help of a sleep consultant, and that’s okay. You’re there for the ones who do need that level of support.
We’ve covered the personal and relational investments you’ll be making as a certified sleep consultant, and now it’s time to get into the juicy stuff - the financial investment.
Yes, becoming a certified sleep consultant is not cheap. Nor should it be. This is a very specific type of knowledge that you need to have. Within our program, we compare the level of content to that of a grad program. What would you pay for a semester of college tuition?
If this type of financial investment is one of the things that makes you pause, consider a program with a paid internship. This opportunity allows you to start making your investment back before you even start working with clients. Technically, you don’t even have to have a business up and running to work as a certified sleep consultant. You can work for other sleep consultants, or, like we previously mentioned, in our paid internship program.
The other thing we must mention is that the overhead costs of running a sleep consulting business, at least as you're getting started, are fairly low. If you’ve got a wifi connection you can easily get started. All you really need is a place for people to find you (a website) and an email address! And any business-forming entities per your state or providence.
All the other things that come with running a business (a CRM system, email marketing program, memberships, etc.) can come over time. There’s no need to rush into everything as you’re getting started. After all, you’re starting this business to make money, right? Make that money, honey!
An Investment of Time
As with any professional coursework, you need to expect that there will be an investment of your time.
The Sleep Consultant Academy course is a go-at-your-own-pace course, but can also be completed in 6-8 weeks if that’s your goal.
Here’s a breakdown of how most lessons within the sleep consultant certification course are made up:
There are 6 main lessons, each with 4-17 modules within each
Modules may include videos or links to outside resources, and all include a summary for you to read
Some modules also include “homework” for you to start creating your business toolkit as you go through the course so that you’re building materials for your business as you go
At the end there is a final exam, and you can submit your request for graduation!
There are also quarterly continuing education presentations that are added to the course on a regular basis
We hope this gives you an idea of how the course is laid out and how much time it may take you to complete it. If you’re interested, you can grab one of our modules for free to test drive the inside before you commit.
Ideas for Making Money as You Get Started with Your Sleep Consulting Business
Since you’re still reading this, we’d love to throw a few savvy ideas your way so you can start to make money for your family ASAP.
Here are a few things you can do as you get started with your business to start making money:
Write blogs for other sleep consultants - content marketing is big in the sleep consulting world because it is one of the venues for people to find us. You should start by doing your own blogging, but also offer to help other sleep consultants with theirs, for a cost, of course! You know the material and they get some time back. Everybody wins!
Offer deep discounts to your first few clients to get experience and testimonials. One of the most powerful things you can include in your marketing for your business is social proof that this works and you actually know what you’re doing and you can really help families. Get your foot in the door with a few clients by offering a big discount. Then, take such good care of them that they want to sing your praises and shout your name from the rooftops! When you wrap up, make sure you ask for reviews and testimonials and use them everywhere - your website, social media, etc.
Find a course with a paid internship - we mentioned this already, but seriously, it’s so simple. Start making your money back before you even launch your business.
Once you’re in, you’re in.
We want you to know that there is no prior degree or knowledge you need to have if becoming a certified sleep consultant is something you’re interested in.
